Roller Shades: Are They Safe?
With all the recent recalls on window treatments, many people are taking a good hard look at their roller shades. The question on everyone's mind is "Are they safe?"
The safety of children is a main concern for many people, as well it should be. Convenience and expense is no excuse for manufacturing or installing blinds that are not safe for children. Child safety needs to be taken seriously.
Are My Blinds Safe?
The main issues with the recalled blinds are the cords. It is the cord that poses the biggest threat to small children. To see if your blinds are safe check the following:
- Are the cords knotted together at the bottom? - If so, children could get their heads caught in the loop.
- Is lifting cord exposed on the back of the shade (particularly roman shades)? - Again, children can get their head caught between the blind and the lift cord.
You can find complete information on the recall and how to fix your blinds at the Window Covering Safety Council's web site. They are dedicated to keeping children safe.
Which Blinds are Safe?
It is highly recommended by several safety councils to only use cordless blinds and shades in homes with small children. This is the absolute safest way to protect your children.
What Kinds of Blinds are Cordless?
As a result of increasing demand for cordless shades, more and more window treatments either come cordless or have a cordless upgrade option. You can get a wide variety of cordless shades including:
- Blackout Single Cell Shades - Blackout shades are great for day sleepers and home theaters. In addition, they work well at insulating a home.
- Translucent Single Cell Shades - For a softer look, translucent shades are ideal.
- Room Darkening Single Cell Shades - Not quite as dark as blackout shades, but these shades block out a significant amount of light and provide insulation.
- Roman Shades - You can get a variety of styles and textures including suede, satin, linen, and woven wood. They come in everything from light filtering to blackout.
Are there Other Options?
For those of you who like more control of your shades, then you can purchase duofold shades as well. The duofold shades allow you to open the blinds from the top down as well as from the bottom up. Available in traditional shades and in roman shades, you can choose this option for complete control of your blinds.
It is easy to see that you do not need to give up style to get child friendly blinds and shades. Whether you want simple roller shades or the elegance of roman shades, you can choose child safe cordless blinds. Not only will they look good in your home, but they are also safe around children.
